Along with 700 or so other entrants, I tried my hand at the New Scientist Forgotten futures flash fiction competition this year and guess what, I made the shortlist!
Which means my story was then read and judged by Neil Gaiman himself.
Now that is cool.
I think this might have made my husband love me a little bit more.
The story, along with other shortlisted entries, can be found here.
Just when I thought that it was not possible…
Well done, wifey! This is portentous of even greater things to come.

Thank you. Fonzie is giving me the vibes x
Hi Claire,
I read your entry and followed the link at the end of the post on the new scientist website. I like the originality of using a test paper to convey the history of a fictional Earth. I also entered but I didn’t make the short list. I should have read exactly what they were looking for a little closer. Would you be able recommend any other upcoming competitions?
Thanks
Hello James, Thanks for your kind comment on my story. What kind of fiction do you write – I can recommend several general short story and flash fiction competitions but am not very knowledgeable on science fiction/fantasy speciality comps. There were 700 entries so a shortlist of 10 is pretty low odds, but you’ve the right idea – if you enter more competitions you’ve more chance of getting recognised. Best wishes,
Claire
